NGO MOVES TO BUILD CAPACITY OF JOURNALISTS ON CONFLICT SENSITIVE REPORTING IN DELTA STATE

By Dew Jemima Wilson

Search for Common Ground is an international non-profit organization operating in 36 countries with a mission to transform the way the world deals with conflict away from adversarial approaches toward cooperative solutions.

In Nigeria, Search is implementing peace building programs in 13 states including Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers states in the Niger Delta.

The State Project Coordinator , Mr Usen Asanga emphasized cooperative peace architecture models as alternative to violent conflicts. He said the organization’s flagship project in the region, “Deepening Peace in the Niger Delta”, recognizes the media as key partners, particularly considering their role in public education, news reporting, and giving citizens a voice.

During the past one year, Search worked with over 90 Journalists in Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa to increase their capacity in conflict sensitive reporting, and support a process of skills transfer to colleagues.

Riding on the success of  Search in previous engagement with journalists in the state, Mr Usen Asanga said Search is set to embark on the second edition of the Common Ground Journalism training for influential local journalists, editors, online reporters and producers, as well as new media influencers in Delta.

The two days Common Ground Journalism training which will commence Thursday 9 to Friday 10 July, 2020 at Top View hotels, Asaba, will draw media practitioners in Delta state, including journalists from print, electronic, and new media across Delta state.

The need to deepen peace in conflict prone areas of the Niger Delta region cannot be overemphasized. Search therefore aims to support inclusive multi-level dialogue to peacefully address governance and resource issues driving conflict in the region.
