First Reform to NYSC in 53 Years Federal Government Unveils Sweeping Changes to Modernise National Youth Service Scheme

TheLEGENDThe Federal Government has announced the most comprehensive reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) since its establishment 53 years ago, introducing far-reaching changes aimed at making the scheme more responsive to Nigeria’s evolving socio-economic realities.

The reforms, unveiled by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, are designed to equip corps members with practical skills, enhance national service delivery and strengthen the scheme’s contribution to youth development and nation-building.

Among the major changes is the introduction of a technology-driven call-up process, which will digitalise mobilization, improve transparency and eliminate administrative bottlenecks. For the first time, the scheme will also be headed by a civilian Director-General, in line with the Federal Government’s broader public sector reforms.

To improve the quality of orientation camps nationwide, the government will introduce a grading and certification system to ensure camps meet prescribed standards of safety, infrastructure and service delivery.

The traditional Passing Out Parade (POP) will also be replaced with a new graduation ceremony, reflecting the programme’s renewed emphasis on skills acquisition, leadership development and professional growth.

As part of the reforms, orientation camp activities will be redesigned into a six-week programme with greater focus on entrepreneurship, digital literacy, leadership training and specialised career pathways to better prepare corps members for the modern workplace.

In another major shift, corps members will now receive skills-based primary assignments aligned with their academic qualifications, professional competencies and career aspirations, allowing them to make more meaningful contributions to their host communities and employers.

The NYSC will also introduce a redesigned uniform that reflects professionalism, national pride and the evolving identity of the scheme, while a risk-sensitive deployment policy will ensure corps members are posted with greater consideration for security and welfare.

Brigadier General Nafiu said the reforms represent a bold step towards repositioning the NYSC for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.

“These reforms reflect our commitment to building a productive, innovative and globally competitive generation of young Nigerians. We are transforming the NYSC into a platform that not only promotes national unity but also equips our youths with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in today’s economy,” he said.

The reforms are expected to be implemented in phases following approval by the Federal Government, with stakeholders expressing optimism that the changes will usher in a new era for one of Nigeria’s most enduring national institutions.
